SCI-Somerset is reporting its first COVID-19 death, a 73-year-old inmate who had been at the facility since October 1st. The inmate had been serving one-and-a-half to six years for indecent assault of a juvenile. There are currently 149 active inmate cases and 48 active staff cases at the facility. Given statewide rates in Pennsylvania, a Council on Criminal Justice report, released this month shows the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is one of six states with fewer deaths than expected.
