GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES BIPARTISAN REDISTRICTING COMMISSION

Governor Larry Hogan issued an executive order establishing an independent commission charged with drawing new legislative and congressional maps. Nearly three years ago, a case challenging Maryland’s legislative districts-in particular the 6th District-went to the Supreme Court. The majority ruled that gerrymandering was a political question. Hogan named three co-chairs of the Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission, including three Democrats, three Republicans and three independent voters. Under state law, however, whatever map the commission comes up with, could ultimately be discarded by the legislature.
