BILL TO PROTECT STUDENT-ATHLETES

A new bill in the Maryland statehouse would protect student-athletes’ economic and physical well-being.  The Jordan McNair Safe and Fair Play Act is named after the Maryland Terrapin football player that died from heat exhaustion on the football practice field in 2018.  The bill calls for colleges to implement guidelines to prevent and treat serious sports injuries.  It would also open the possibility of athletes being paid for endorsements.  Five other states have already passed similar laws and 35 other states have filed legislation this year to also consider allowing athletes to be paid.
