FROSH, ENVIRONMENTAL SECRETARY ANNOUNCE VERSO SETTLEMENT

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and Environmental Secretary Benjamin Grumbles have announced a settlement with Verso Luke LLC and its parent company, the Verso Corporation, for seepages into the North Branch of the Potomac River that threatened public health and the environment. The settlement involves the release of so-called “pulping liquor” at the mill, which created an imminent and substantial danger to Maryland. Under terms of the settlement, Verso will be required to continue its investigation into the source of the seepages, stop the discharge, and remediate the contaminated site. Verso will also pay a civil penalty of $650,000, and reimburse attorney fees, and pay past and future costs to the state for the oversight of the investigation and remediation.
