Mechanic Street was closed for about two hours late yesterday morning in to the afternoon, when a car crashed into the Braddock Electric Building in the 800-block. The area was closed because the vehicle hit a gas meter. The Southern States building was evacuated. Center and Mechanic Streets were closed from Queen City Drive to the Narrows. Motorists were directed around the area and encouraged to travel on Interstate 68 to LaVale. The accident scene was cleared after about two hours. The Cumberland City Police and Fire Departments, along with Columbia Gas crews were on the scene.
