Governor Larry Hogan appointed Judge Laura Ripken to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals; she is the wife of Oriole legend Cal Ripken, Jr. She was one of several nominees submitted by the Appellate Courts Judicial Nominating Commission. She is currently the administrative judge for Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. She has been the judge overseeing the case of Jarrod Ramos, the man accused of killing five people in the Capital Gazette newsroom in 2018. Prior to her appointment to the bench in 2010, she served 19 years as a county prosecutor.
