SMOKE ALARMS ALERT COUPLE TO FIRE

Smoke alarms are being credited to waking a Westernport couple as fire swept through their Roosevelt Street home early yesterday morning. Leo and Debra Nesmith were uninjured in the fire, which originated in the basement near a natural gas heater. The property was destroyed, causing an estimated loss of $87,000 to the structure and $100,000 in contents. The Nesmiths are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
