SCENIC RAILROAD ORDERED TO REPLACE TIES

The Federal Railroad Administration has ordered the replacement of about 50,000 railroad ties on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad track  between Cumberland and Frostburg before excursions can begin again. An inspection shows that some of the ties are nearly 50 years old, and it will take about $2 million to replace them. The railroad ceased operations near the end of 2019, and the pandemic kept it from restarting, causing a loss of its primary source of revenue, ticket sales.
