Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate have voted unanimously to repeal Maryland My Maryland as the state song. The lyrics to the 1861 song have been the subject of controversy for decades due to their support of the Confederacy. The lyrics refer to Abraham Lincoln as a tyrant and despot and call for Maryland to join the fight against the Northern scum. The Maryland House previously voted 94 to 38 to repeal the song. According to the Baltimore Sun some Republicans in the House felt that the song was falling victim to cancel culture.
