OLDEST KNOWN COLONIAL SETTLEMENT FOUND IN MARYLAND

Archaeologists say they’ve found the oldest known colonial settlement in Maryland.  Senior archaeologist Ruth Mitchell says they found remnants of an abandoned fort dating back to 1634.  Mitchell says they believe 200 or so English colonists lived there at the height of its population.  They also uncovered a musket bullet, German stoneware, pottery, jewelry and a cannonball along with evidence Native Americans once lived there.  Mitchell says it’s a once-in-a-lifetime discovery.  Public tours of the site will be available soon.
