MARYLAND FINDS OVER 500,000 RECENT FRAUDULENT UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS

The Maryland Department of Labor has detected over 508,000 fraudulent new unemployment insurance claims since the beginning of May. Fraudulent claims span from a low of 23,313 for the week ending May 8th, to a high of 190,016 for the week ending June 5th. Over the course of the pandemic, 1.3 million claims were flagged by the state and confirmed as fraudulent. Maryland and other states have been combating bad actors using illegally obtained data to file fraudulent employment insurance claims.
