The cause of the fire that destroyed the Westernport Redman Club is still under investigation, but it is believed it originated on the rear deck of the building. The estimated losses were placed at a half-million dollars. Heavy equipment was brought in to raze the building, which allowed firefighters to extinguish the blaze; the building partially collapsed during the firefighting operation. The initial call was received at 2:15 a.m. yesterday. The fire was fueled by a gas line in the basement, and it continued to burn until Columbia Gas eventually turned if off. There were no injuries in the fire.
