Elk Garden resident Stanley VanMeter is listed in stable condition, following a crash last weekend on Route 36, near the landfill. VanMeter crashed his coal truck and was initially taken to UPMC-Western Maryland, before being airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. The fully-loaded coal truck traveled off the highway into a culvert, before continuing about 100 yards into the woods. Route 36 was closed most of the day last Saturday, with traffic being rerouted to Cabin Run Road and Vale Summit Road during the emergency.
