GOVERNOR VETOES HOUSE BILL ENFORCING GENDER STANDARDS IN ORGANIZED SPORTS

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is nixing a measure requiring organizations to either designate sports by gender or declare them “co-ed.”  State officials say House Bill 972, if enacted, also would have restricted “students of the male sex” from participating in athletic teams or sports designated for females.  Proponents say the bill would have maintained the integrity of girls’ sports.  Opponents insist it would have unfairly targeted transgender athletes.
