MAIL SERVICE LESS EFFICIENT AFTER CONSOLIDATION MOVE

A report from the Office of the Inspector General shows that mail processing operations are less efficient and service performance is lower for Western Maryland. An article in the Cumberland Times-News states that Congressman David Trone is calling for a study to see if moving mail processing for ZIP codes beginning with “215” and “267” would be more efficient if they are moved from Baltimore to other processing facilities. The Cumberland mail processing center was consolidated in 2014 and 2015, and the moved saved the postal service $8 million, but, according to the report, the Western Maryland area has received poor service in certain areas. In fact, the region received some of the lowest performance scores in the Chesapeake Division.
