Twenty-two bears were taken on the first day of the Maryland black bear hunt on Monday, the first day of the hunt. Nine males and 13 females were checked. According to the Cumberland Times-News, the largest bear taken was 294 pounds. Five were harvested in Allegany County, one in Washington County and 16 in Garrett. The hunt, which is now in its 19th year, will continue through Saturday. The Department of Natural Resources issued 950 hunting permits this year.
