USE OF COAL FOR ELECTRIC GENERATING DIMINISHING

A new analysis reports that nearly a quarter of the current coal-fired electric-generating capacity in the U.S. will be retired by the end of 2029. That could adversely affect Pennsylvania, the third-largest coal-producing state in the U.S. The information comes in a report by the Energy Information Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Energy. Researchers say factors driving the trend include continued competition from natural gas and renewable energy, as well as more stringent wastewater regulations taking effect in 2028.
