The number of Marylanders filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits jumped by more than 260 last week. The U.S. Labor Department reports about 26-hundred claims were filed in the week ending on Christmas Eve. That’s up from the previous week’s total of around 23-hundred. Claims in neighboring DC fell by about 40. They dropped by 117 in Virginia. Nationally, initial jobless filings jumped by nine thousand, to 216-thousand.
