Outgoing House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer says the decision by the top three Democrats to step down from their leadership posts was not part of a “coordinated effort.” Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, the Maryland Democrat explained the move to hand over party leadership to the younger generation was made individually by him, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Majority Whip James Clyburn. All three announced they would be stepping down back in November. Hoyer noted it wasn’t a difficult decision, and that it in no way marked the end of his political career. Hoyer said he intends to remain active and will consider running again in 2024.
