WEST VIRGINIA SETTLES WITH WALGREENS FOR $83 MILLION

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has announced a settlement between his office and Walgreens for $83 million. It resolves a lawsuit that alleged the pharmacy chain failed to maintain effective controls as a distributor and dispenser, which contributed to an oversupply of opioids in the state. Walgreens will pay the settlement over an eight-year period. Walgreens is part of a larger litigation involving other major pharmacies. Walmart and CVS settled with the state last September; Walmart agreed to a settlement of just over $65 million, and CVS for $82.5 million. Last August, Rite Aid settled for up to $30 million to resolve similar litigation.
