HANDGUN LEGISLATION PASSES W.V. HOUSE PANEL

A West Virginia House committee has approved and passed on to the full House a bill to allow handguns to be carried on campuses in West Virginia.  The proposal would remove any administrative penalties a university might levy against anyone carrying a gun on a campus.  The bill passed the Senate last month.  More than three dozen people spoke in opposition to the bill earlier this week.  Some argued it could lead to an increase in suicides while others pointed to the recent shootings at Michigan State University as proof that the bill could lead an unsafe atmosphere on a campus.  Supporters said carrying a gun on campus is already legal and that this bill would prevent a university from punishing someone carrying a gun.  The full House could take up the bill this week.
