The Maryland Senate has unanimously confirmed two more of Governor Wes Moore’s executive appointments. Brigadier General Janeen Birckhead will be Maryland’s next Adjutant General, becoming the only Black woman leading a state military in the nation. The state’s Military Department includes the Maryland National Guard and the Maryland Defense Force. Paul Monteiro will become the first secretary of the state’s Department of Service and Civic Innovation. The governor created the agency to house an initiative that includes a public service option-year for high school graduates and other service programs.
