MARYLAND REPORTS FIRST LOCAL CASE OF MALARIA IN DECADES

A case of rare locally acquired malaria is being reported in Maryland.  The state’s Department of Health made the announcement over the weekend, saying an unidentified patient in the Washington, DC area contracted malaria despite not having traveled outside of the country recently.  It’s the state’s first case of locally acquired malaria in 40 years.  Since May, there have been seven locally acquired malaria cases in Florida, and one reported in Texas.
