Pennsylvania drivers would be required to give stopped school buses more room under a measure approved by the state Senate Tuesday. Senate Bill 897 would extend the stopping distance requirement to 15 feet before reaching a bus whose signal arm and lights are activated. The main sponsor of the bill, Republican Lisa Baker of Luzerne, says creating the extra buffer gives students more space to safely walk around a stopped bus. She says it also sends a message to drivers that a safety zone can’t be ignored.
