BILL THAT PENALIZES MISCLASSIFICATION OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS MOVES

FORWARD

Legislation that would impose tougher penalties on companies that misclassify construction workers is moving forward in the Pennsylvania House. The Labor and Industry Committee has approved the bill late last week on a party-line vote, with Democrats for it and Republicans against. Separate but similar legislation is moving in the Senate, where a panel approved it earlier this month on a bipartisan vote of ten to one.  In addition to stricter punishment, the legislation would allow workers who are misclassified to bring their own lawsuits against employers; that’s known as a private right of action.
