The House Transportation Committee is considering legislation that would make it a little easier for people who are trying to get a REAL ID. Under current law, Pennsylvania requires that they provide an original Social Security card in order to verify their Social Security number. However, committee minority chair Kerry Benninghoff’s House Bill 1243 would allow residents to prove their Social numbers with pay stubs or W-2 forms, among other documents. The REAL ID push began after the 9/11 attacks but the federal government has repeatedly pushed back the deadline for the new requirements to take effect. Currently in Pennsylvania, that’s supposed to happen by 2025.
