SHAPIRO SAYS NEW BUDGET SATISFIES CRITERIA TO THWART UNFAIR SCHOOL FUNDING

A new performance model for basic public school funding is included in the governor’s budget. A state court previously ruled that Pennsylvania’s funding system is unconstitutional because it doesn’t address all school resources in the same way, or fairly. That ruling said that’s particularly true in poorer districts that can’t generate as much property tax revenue as wealthier ones. Governor Josh Shapiro in announcing his proposed budget Tuesday talked about a new “adequacy formula” that measures how much money each district needs. He says an additional 872 million-dollars would be available to make sure every school has, what he calls, the appropriate level of resources they need to serve students.
