Maryland Democrat Ben Cardin has issued a statement following the U.S. Senate’s dismissal of impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Cardin says Republicans in the House and Senate disagree with President Biden’s border policies, but impeachment is not the proper vehicle for responding to policy differences. Cardin says impeachment should be reserved for high crimes and misdemeanors, and Secretary Mayorkas has not engaged in any behavior that would rise to that constitutional level. He is calling on Republicans to work with Democrats to pass a comprehensive border security package instead of blocking the necessary funding and policy change to do so.
