USGC SAYS LIMITED ACCESS CHANNEL HAS OPENED

The U.S. Coast Guard says the 35-foot deep, Fort McHenry Limited Access Channel opened at 6:00 yesterday morning and it will remain open until Monday or Tuesday, depending on the weather. The four-day opening will allow larger ships to leave the Port of Baltimore, for the first time since the March 26th  collapse of the Key Bridge. The three other temporary channels will remain available and commercial vessels should use those, so they don’t impede the ships that have to use the deeper channel. After the channel closes next week, it will not be available again until sometime in May. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects to open the Port’s permanent 700-foot wide, 50-foot-deep channel by the end of May.
