CONTROLLED EXPLOSIVES USED TO BREAK APART KEY BRIDGE DEBRIS

Controlled explosives have been used to break apart a large section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge that was lying across the cargo ship DALI in Baltimore.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers carefully planned the operation to remove tons of steel and after a weekend weather delay, the demolition took place just after 5:00 p.m. Monday. The 21-member crew of the DALI remained on the ship and sheltered in place during the explosion. Salvage crews will now remove the bridge wreckage from the water so the channel can be cleared, the ship can be moved, and the Port of Baltimore can reopen by the end of the month.  The ship has been stranded in the Patapsco River since crashing into the bridge on March 26 and causing its collapse.
