The Maryland Sheriff’s Association is calling on Governor Wes Moore to demand the resignation of Department of Juvenile Services Secretary Vincent Schiraldi. Carroll County Sheriff and MSA President Jim DeWees has sent the governor a letter on behalf of the association saying since Schiraldi’s appointment in 2022, his extreme policies and lack of leadership have directly made communities less safe in Maryland. The letter says law enforcement agencies throughout the state have grown increasingly frustrated with the inability of the DJS to hold violent juvenile offenders accountable for their actions. In a statement, Governor Moore’s administration says it is committed to holding youth accountable while providing rehabilitation, adding that millions of dollars have been invested in direct care services for youth under DJS supervision.
