The point person for the U.S. in the latest effort to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia is telling a Maryland judge he’s not that familiar with the case. Abrego Garcia, who Homeland Security says is an illegal immigrant and gang member, has been fighting deportation attempts for months, becoming a focal point of President Trump’s immigration crackdown. At today’s hearing in Greenbelt, ICE official John Cantu said his only involvement with the case was a brief Teams call with a State Department attorney. Cantu also couldn’t explain why the U.S. wants to deport Abrego Garcia to Liberia instead of Costa Rica, where the defendant prefers to go.
