Former Cumberland City Police Captain James Burt pled guilty to one count of misconduct in office and was sentenced to two years in prison with all but 30 days suspended. This will be followed by three years of supervised probation; he has also resigned from the Cumberland Police Department. Judge Timothy Finan sentenced Captain Burt. Maryland State Prosecutor Charlton Howard III noted that, “anyone who violates the public’s trust and betrays the community they are sworn to serve, should be held accountable.”
