The Cumberland Mayor and City Council recently recommended expansion of the Downtown Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. The Register is the official list of historic properties, recognized by the federal government for their significance in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture, according to the Cumberland Times-News. City Administrator Jeff Silka says the move “would expand the federal district designation, and allows the building owners and homeowners to access historic funding.”
