State health officials want outside operators for Mildred Mitchell-Bateman Hospital in Huntington and William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital in Weston. Both hospitals will stay state-owned, and neither will be sold. Operators must have experience running inpatient civil and forensic psychiatric facilities. Operating costs at Sharpe have topped 128-million-dollars per fiscal year, driven largely by contract and agency staffing. Proposals are due late this year, and lawmakers have raised concerns about costs and transparency.
