Flu season is getting an earlier start than usual across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Maryland health officials report that five-point-15-percent of influenza tests came back positive during the week ending October 3rd, compared to roughly two-percent during the same period last year. Virginia is also seeing an increase in respiratory illnesses, although overall activity remains low. Nationwide, about three-point-six-percent of flu tests are positive, compared to less than one-percent at this time last year. Health experts say the early rise is worth watching after last winter’s particularly severe flu season, and they’re encouraging residents to get vaccinated before infections increase further.
