Maryland’s annual black bear hunting season is open in the western part of the state. The six-day hunt runs through Saturday in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washington counties. State wildlife officials say hunters were selected through a lottery system and each hunting team is limited to harvesting one bear. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says the hunt is intended to help manage the state’s growing black bear population.
