A Baltimore judge has vacated the conviction of Adnan Syed for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee when they were high school students. The motion to vacate came last week after prosecutors said evidence in the previous trial was largely circumstantial and they lacked confidence in the integrity of the conviction. The City State’s Attorney’s Office is requesting a new trial In the interest of fairness and justice but is not saying that Syed is innocent. He had been serving a life sentence but has been released to home detention with a GPS monitor. Syed’s first trial ended in a mistrial and a jury convicted him after a second trial. His case gained national attention in the 2014 “Serial” podcast.
