Former Ridgeley Police Chief Erik Wyer has filed a federal lawsuit against the town of Ridgeley and its Mayor, William Shepherd, charging abuse of authority and unlawful requests. The town was served with the lawsuit Tuesday afternoon. Wyer, an eight-year veteran of the Maryland State Police, who later became Chief of Police, alleges that before being fire in May, Mayor Shepherd quote, “interfered with, obstructed and hindered him from performing his duties as Chief of Police. He is seeking at least $150,000 in damages. In one instance, for example, Wyer and fellow officers were told by Shepherd to issue tickets to drivers from out of town, but not Ridgeley motorists, according to the Cumberland Times-News.
