Maryland Governor Wes Moore offered testimony to a House committee in support of his proposed service year option. Moore says Serving Every Region Through Vocational Exploration would give young people an opportunity to serve the state while getting real-world experience. Under the SERVE Act students with a high school diploma or certificate would partner with a mentor and work a 30-hour week at 15-dollars an hour. There would also be opportunities to take part in professional development and financial literacy programs. After completing the program successfully participants would earn a 3-thousand-dollar stipend. Moore is scheduled to testify in front of a Senate committee today.
