WASHINGTON COUNTY JUDGE RULES ELECTION BOARD VIOLATED LAW

A Washington County judge says the local elections board broke state law by not informing voters that their absentee ballots were rejected during this year’s primary.  Judge Brandon Neuman ordered the board to notify voters who fail to sign or date their ballots in a ruling issued this past Friday, saying they should have a chance to dispute the decision or cast a provisional ballot instead.  Republican County Commissioners Chair Nick Sherman says he still believes the elections board complied with state law, saying the rules don’t allow them to start processing mail-in ballots until 7:00 a.m. on Election Day.  Witold Walczak with the American Civil Liberties Union argues that election workers can see any signature or date omissions without opening the ballot, meaning disqualification notices, which are sent out by a number of other Pennsylvania counties, are not considered a legal violation.
