Dozens of new lawsuits have been filed against Maryland, alleging sexual abuse in the state’s juvenile detention facilities. Levy Konigsberg attorneys have announced that with 85 newly filed lawsuits the firm is now representing more than 650 survivors of Maryland Juvenile Detention sexual abuse. The lawsuits allege that the plaintiffs suffered repeated sexual abuse while in custody at one of 12 juvenile detention facilities across the state. Attorney Jerome Block says it’s appalling and disappointing that the state has refused to take responsibility and instead of supporting survivors, it has attempted to revoke vested rights provided by the Maryland Child Victims Act. Last week, Governor Wes Moore signed into law a bill that cuts compensation caps in half. Beginning June 1st, the most abuse victims can claim is 700-thousand dollars, down from the 1-point-5-million in the original law.
