MEDICAL SCHOOL FUNDING CONCERNS IN WEST VIRGINIA

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is worried about a federal bill that could hurt medical student funding.  The “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed the House by one vote and would eliminate the Grad PLUS loan program.  School spokesman Doug Smith says students currently graduate with an average debt of 240-thousand dollars.  The proposed changes would cap borrowing at 150-thousand dollars, forcing students to find an extra 100-thousand dollars upfront.  Smith warns this could reduce the number of physicians serving rural areas that already lack primary care providers.
