Vincent Schiraldi is no longer the Secretary of Maryland’s Department of Juvenile Services. Governor Wes Moore made the announcement Monday and named Betsy Fox Tolentino as the Acting Secretary of DJS. According to the Baltimore Banner, Schiraldi claims he resigned, and he’s leaving because the negative media attention on him and a small number of young people committing crimes could be a stumbling block to forward progress. There have been calls for Schiraldi to step down from lawmakers, police and organizations who say he failed to take action on juvenile crime. In addition, a recent audit by the state’s Department of Legislative Services has found significant failures in the Department of Juvenile Services. The state’s Senate Republican Caucus has issued a statement that says Schiraldi’s removal was long overdue.
