Kathy Mattea Invited To Join The Grand Ole Opry

The four-time CMA Award winner and host of Wes Virginia Public Radio’s “Mountain Stage” was invited on Saturday night by fellow Opry member Charlie McCoy, who surprised her during a performance of her signature hit “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses.”

Mattea, a West Virginia native, has earned multiple No. 1 singles including “Goin’ Gone,” “Come from the Heart,” and “Burnin’ Old Memories,” along with CMA Female Vocalist honors in 1989 and 1990. Known for her blend of country, folk and roots music, she’s been a frequent Opry guest for decades.

“I will not forget this night. Ever. Ever. Ever,” Mattea told the crowd. Opry executive producer Dan Rogers praised her “artistic integrity” and “sheer joy” onstage, calling her an artist who will feel right at home in the Opry’s historic circle.

The next performer set to join the Opry cast is Steve Earle, who Emmylou Harris will induct on Sept. 17. Opry members Vince Gill and Marty Stuart are set to appear that night, as well.
