West Virginia’s Charter School Board is taking a stand in a high-stakes legal battle. The board voted Wednesday to file a legal brief supporting religious exemptions to the state’s mandatory vaccination law. The case is now before the state Supreme Court, which has already put a hold on a lower court ruling that sided with families seeking those exemptions. Board Chairman Adam Kissel says the charter school system has unique insight into how religious exemptions have played out. Board member Chanda Adkins noted that 45 other states already allow religious exemptions to school vaccine requirements.
