Appalachian Power customers across West Virginia are seeing higher electric bills starting this month. The state’s Public Service Commission approved a rate hike of four-dollars-and-84-cents per thousand kilowatts used. The increase took effect on Monday, and the company cannot file for another base rate hike until after June 2027. Energy Efficient West Virginia says the increase is not justified, and a Beckley attorney has filed a challenge in state Supreme Court on behalf of customers. Advocates are calling for a rate-payer’s bill of rights, with stronger protections for families, the elderly, and small businesses.
