Two workers are dead and a third is in critical condition after a chemical accident yesterday at the Ames Goldsmith Catalyst Refiners plant near Institute and Nitro. The facility was in the process of being shut down when chemicals mixed in a pump area, creating a violent reaction. Around 21 people were treated at area hospitals for respiratory symptoms, and seven Kanawha County ambulance crew members were among those hospitalized. Governor Patrick Morrisey offered condolences to the families of the victims, and says the state Department of Environmental Protection is monitoring the air quality in the area.
