The North Branch Correctional Institution along McMullen Highway reported five homicides in 2025, the most in a single facility in one year. North Branch has had two inmate homicide cases so far this year. According to the Baltimore Sun, about 70 per cent of inmate homicides since 2015 occurred at either North Branch, Jessup, or the Western Correctional Institutions. The increase in inmate homicides may be caused by many factors, including over population per prison, staffing issues, conflicts between prison gangs, and poor institutional leadership.
