The Chesapeake Bay is healthier than it has been in nearly 40 years of monitoring. A new report from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science gave the nation’s largest estuary a grade of C-plus. Researchers say water quality improved thanks to dissolved oxygen, underwater grasses, and reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus pollution. Scientists say the results show long-term restoration efforts are paying off, although challenges remain in some parts of the bay.
